Hernando deputies arrest man who tried to set ex on fire

BROOKSVILLE (FOX 13) -

Hernando County deputies have arrested 52-year-old Sylvester Kulaga.

They say he nearly pulled off a heinous double murder; the kind seen in horror movies.

According to investigators, three days after getting out of jail on drug and larceny charges, Kulaga broke into his ex's house where he used to live.

They say he kicked in the bedroom door then sprayed his ex, Lisa Massey, and her new boyfriend, James Mullis, with lighter fluid while they were in bed.

Deputies say after dousing them, he grabbed a can of spray paint and a lighter, then tried to set them on fire.

Fortunately, it didn't work.

Massey then began to fight with him.  A roommate also came in to help.

After a struggle, they were eventually able to get him out without anyone getting seriously hurt.

Deputies say Kulaga then took off.

"He obviously went there with intent," said Public Information Officer Denise Moloney.

"Could've been a bad situation if he was successful," she said.

He faces two counts of attempted first degree murder and battery charges.

Deputies had considered him very dangerous.  Folks nearby are thankful he's not a threat anymore.

"When they got that kind of anger they don't give up," said neighbor Carol Archambeault.
