Woman kicks NYPD dog in mouth

A NYPD K-9 is nursing his canines after being kicked twice in the mouth while assisting officers breaking up a subway brawl.

Police spokesman Paul Browne said Tuesday that Bear, a 6-year-old German shepherd, sustained two cracked canines, two chipped teeth and a cut tongue when a woman being handcuffed kicked him twice in the mouth. Officers were breaking up a fight between four women on a New York City subway platform.

It happened on the southbound platform of the No. 4 subway at 59th Street and Lexington Avenue Tuesday at 11:15 a.m.

Police say that Officer Rafael Diaz called for assistance to help break up a fight involving the women, ages 19 to 31. One woman, 19, was being choked by another 19-year-old.  The two women, ages 31 and 22, pushed Officer Diaz as he attempted to stop the assault on the 19-year-old victim.

Officer Vincent Tieniber and Bear arrived on the scene moments later.

Tieniber, suffered a sprained wrist during the arrest.  Despite his injury, Tieniber said Bear kept the woman's foot in his mouth until she was handcuffed.

Ravenia Matos-Davis, 22, of Queens, was arrested and charged with injuring a police animal, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration.

19-year-old Alexandria James of the Bronx was charged with strangulation and criminal possession of a controlled substance. Her 19-year-old victim sustained bruising, scratches, and reported pain to her neck but refused medical attention. Tabricia Moore, 31, also of the Bronx, was charged with resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.

Bear was treated and released from the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan. He is due to return Wednesday when his two canine teeth are expected to be capped, and two others shaved where they are currently chipped, after which time Bear is expected to return to full duty.

A bicycle rental war is being waged in Central Park by Columbus Circle. Bike and Roll is a Parks Department-sanctioned bike rental with rental booths in the park complete with helmets and bouncer-size security guards. Bike and Roll's president says his employees are being threatened and harassed by non-licensed illegal vendors in the park while they hawk to tourists. The individual vendors, who appeared to be trying to rent out bicycles using pedicab licenses, were not friendly to us, either.
