Car jumps curb in East Village

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The driver of the vehicle that left several people injured and a trail of destruction in the area of 2nd Avenue and East 4th Street in the East Village has been arrested.

Shaun Martin, 32, of Queens, was driving under the influence of either alcohol or drugs when his car rocketed onto a sidewalk at around 7 a.m. on Wednesday, the NYPD said.

Six people were injured, including the driver and a passenger. A 60-year-old grocery store worker was critically hurt, according to police.

All the victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital.

Martin's rented white Nissan Altima jumped the curb and then slammed into a 25-foot-tall tree, a phone booth, parked bicycles, street signs, lamppost, fire hydrant, and the East Village Farm storefront. The car stopped in a crosswalk.

The car sustained heavy front-end damage. At least one other vehicle was also damaged.

Glass, debris and flowers littered the area.

Police said that a flying fire hydrant hit a cyclist using the city's new Citi Bike program, the AP reported.

Police said this isn't the first time Martin has been charged with inebriated driving.

Initial reports indicted eight people had been injured but later in the day police updated the count to six.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
