A gun found in an Ybor City movie theater bathroom belonged to a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputy, Tampa Police confirmed Tuesday.
Investigators said a 9-year-old boy found a loaded Glock in the bathroom of the Muvico Theaters in Centro Ybor Sunday afternoon; he showed his dad, who notified police.
Hillsborough Deputy Luke Hussey told police he was off-duty when he left his personal gun on the toilet paper dispenser while using the restroom. It took him 90 minutes to realize what he'd done, but by then police had seized the weapon.
"This is a mistake of serious concern for us and we don't take it lightly and we will investigate that thoroughly," said Hillsborough Det. Larry McKinnon, adding Hussey could face disciplinary action at the Sheriff's Office. "Mistakes are made and you're going to have to answer to the consequences of those mistakes," he said.
Investigators said Hussey, 38, had notified the theater manager as soon as he realized that he had forgotten it in the stall.
"That's kind of scary," said Jaime Walker, who goes to the Movico theater often. "As a deputy this is your job. These are the things that you have on a daily basis, so for you not to have your firearm on you at all times," he said.
"He has to be more careful about what he does because he's someone that we look up to," said Enrique Hernandez, another moviegoer.
Tampa Police said losing a weapon isn't against the law, so the deputy will not face charges.
