Chester County Residents Describe Severe Weather

NEW GARDEN TWP., Pa. -

A swiftly running stream on a late spring day in Chester County.

Scenic and peaceful if you don't look about 100 yards up the road:

A tangle of trees and power lines cutting off Penn Grove Road in New Garden Township.

Residents say the nasty weather rolled in at 9 a.m. this morning.

"Rain going sideways. The wind… you didn't hear the freight train kind of noise and nothing like that. Just lightning," described resident Sylvia Lawrence,

Where Penn Grove and Egypt Run come together, in this rural town, a trail of trees and debris seem to mark the path of the high winds.

Power was knocked out just after 9 a.m. say residents. It was back for some by mid-day.

By early afternoon, a state crew was on-site getting ready to pry-open--Penn Grove--a state road,

According to another resident, Steve Matlaga,"The color of the sky changed and you could feel a temperature change and everything else. And then the sky just opened and the winds were amazing. I mean the water was just like walls and sheets of water."

The trunks of trees form a barricade across the road here. Squeezed in between them, a smashed Chevy. It's driver apparently caught in the heavy gusts and falling timber.

The driver was not hurt say police, but will not soon forget this June morning in the late spring in Chester County.
