Charges dropped against woman in jaywalking death

MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - Charges of vehicular homicide and reckless conduct have been dropped against a metro Atlanta mother whose son was killed by a hit & run driver while jaywalking.

Raquel Johnson appeared in Cobb County State Court Thursday and requested a new trial in the August 2011 incident. She pleaded no contest to a charge of jaywalking and paid a $200 fine.

Authorities say 33-year-old Nelson and her three children were crossing a street after they got off a bus when they were hit by a van. The driver of the van swerved to try avoiding the family, but didn't stop.

He later said he thought he hit a basket and post on the side of the road and was sentenced to six months in jail on hit & run charge.
