City Confirms L&I Inspector's Suicide Week After Deadly Collapse

PHILADELPHIA -

City officials confirmed Thursday that a Department of Licenses and Inspections inspector has passed away from an apparent suicide a little more than a week after last week's deadly building collapse in Center City.

"We are here to give you some very, very sad news. We are a city in deep and profound mourning," Chief of Staff Everett Gillison told reporters. "With the building collapse a week ago, we have now lost seven lives in connection with this tragedy."

Ronald Wagenhoffer, 52, a 16-year L&I inspector, has passed away from what city officials say appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound last night, shortly after 9 p.m.

He was involved in the inspection that took place at the building on May 14 of this year, after complaints surfaced.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his wife, Michelle, and his son. We ask for continued privacy during this time of mourning and grief," Gillison said.

The announcement was also used as a time to ask other employees working on the case to look out for each other.

"If you see something, please say something," said the official.

A top-ranking law enforcement source told FOX 29 of the death Wednesday night. The city was only immediately confirming that a "tragedy" had occurred.

We now know that Wagenhoffer shot himself with a gun shortly after 9 p.m.

There are still a lot of questions surrounding the deadly collapse. A grand jury is now investigating who's to blame and whether to charge more people.

So far, one man, 42-year-old Sean Benschop, is charged with six counts of involuntary manslaughter, though his lawyers say he's being made a scapegoat.
