Students Join Fight For More Philly Schools Education Funding

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The parents of Philadelphia School District students have made their voices loud and clear when it comes to the "doomsday" budget cuts. But now, it's the students who are speaking out.

Parents are presenting about 4,000 letters written by students to city council members Wednesday morning, urging them to pass the liquor-by-the-drink tax.

The letters express the importance of art, music, sports, counselors and others.

Without additional funding to fill a more than $300-million budget deficit, the district will be forced to eliminate more than 3,700 jobs.

Among the students joining the education funding fight is Jordan McLaughlin, the teen who stopped and helped pull survivors to safety after last week's deadly building collapse at 22nd and Market streets.

FOX 29's Stacey Stauffer spoke to Jordan on Wednesday morning at the Allen Lane train station in Mount Airy and had more details on what's planned for Wednesday here in Philly and in Harrisburg.

On Tuesday, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter paid a surprise visit to Harrisburg, is seeking school funding from the Pennsylvania's House Appropriations Committee.

Nutter said he wants to state to put up an additional $120 million next year to close the budget gap.

Republicans who control the legislature say they are not opposed to helping, but they say the state's finances are tight and other school districts are also struggling.

And some parents are going to the state capital Wednesday to deliver and read thousands of letters from Philly school students. It's something they hope will urge lawmakers to support the funding of city public schools.

This will happen at 12:30 p.m. at the Pennsylvania Capitol's rotunda.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
