SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Michigan's gas prices are the highest in the continental U.S. That has some state Democrats are calling for an investigation.

They held a news conference on Tuesday urging the state attorney general to investigate exactly why gas prices have been so high.

We have been told the Exxon Mobil refinery in Joliet, Illinois was down for two months, and that is the reason for the jump in prices. It is now back up and running, and prices are expected to drop.

However, some lawmakers are not so sure the refinery excuse is real.

"Unfairly high gas prices hurt everyone. They make it more expensive just to get to work, to get to the grocery store or appointments. High gas prices are scaring away visitors from Michigan just as we are getting into the height of our tourism season," said state Rep. Collene Lamonte. "We can't afford to wait any longer. We need to get some relief at the pump now."

It could be a coincidence, but gas prices were falling Tuesday night. However, if you are still fuming over the high gas prices, the group has started a petition demanding an investigation. If you want to add your name, visit www.lowermigasprices.com.
