City Controller, Changes To Ensure Smooth Elections

Posted: Updated:

Alan Butkovitz, City Controller of Philadelphia released the audit of the ballots used in the 2012 Presidential election Tuesday.

What's more, he found about 40% of the 27,306 ballots cast occurred because of mistakes made in creating polling books.

Another 4,827 ballots were cast due to errors made in the printing of supplemental polling books.

Butkovitz spoke out on the influence of this issue, saying "the election process is a cornerstone of our democracy. The voters should be confident that all of the aspects of the process are being implemented fairly."

He then went on to make some recommendations to ensure this doesn't happen again, including: procedure checklists, a $30 dollar bonus for those who go to training, etc.

"These recommendations will reduce the number of provisional ballots cast in future election and permit the ballots to be used properly, as intended," says Butkovitz.
