Ardmore Prepares For US Open

Posted: Updated:
ARDMORE, Pa. -

Golfers and fans descend on Ardmore, PA, gearing up for the US Open.

The iconic wicker pin flags are freshly painted, and crews are working on last-minute preparations, getting ready for the "practice rounds" that begin on Monday.

It's a huge week for golf, a huge week for our region. The US Open gets under way in just hours at Merion Golf Club. Officially, the practice rounds don't start until Monday but some golfers already took to the course today including Tiger Woods and Geoff Ogilvy.

Most players arrived at Merion today, trying to get a feel for this golf course. Fans who don't have tickets for this week were able to see some of the golfers from public streets around the course.

One of these fans was Tina Bodine from Havertown. According to her, "We just found a shady spot watching the players as they go through. I get a little star struck so I'm taking pictures but it's been fun."

This residential area has really been transformed into a mini city--with merchandise and hospitality tents. Some of these tents are set up in people's front yards. The USGA is paying residents top dollar to access to their properties.

For many out here, it's the eve of one of the biggest sporting events the area has seen in years-- the weeklong super bowl of golf.

"I would say it's a carnival atmosphere all the sudden," said Bob and Joanie Hall, members at the Merion Golf Club.

The Hall's live across the street from the 15th green, but you can't see their house. That's because of a massive hospitality tent that now gobbles up their front lawn.

More than 25 thousand people a day are expected through the gates.

Traffic will be a major issue in the morning and later afternoon in this part of Delaware County.
