Parishioners Rally To Keep Open Historic Church

PHILADELPHIA -

Members of the Latino community are fighting to keep their church open.

Protesters rallied today at La Milagrosa, in Philadelphia's Spring Garden section.

Catholic church leaders in Barcelona, Spain decided to sell the chapel for one million dollars last year to help pay for the retirements for their priests in Spain.

Parishioners of Philadelphia's oldest church serving the region's Latino community are now fighting to keep their church and its rich history.

For over 100 years La Milagrosa has served as a beacon of hope for Latinos immigrating to the Philadelphia region.

The church was started by Sister Agatha Quintana who was of Mexican and Spanish descent and arrived in Philadelphia to support the growing Spanish colony. She originally used her home as a place to prepare Latino children for Holy Communion.

As the Latino population grew, Mother Quintana in partnership with Sister Katherine Drexel, and 150 Latinos of African descent and many other Latino groups founded La Milagrosa. The official Archdiocese records establish La Milagrosa as the location where the first Spanish mass was held in the Philadelphia Region.
