Mom, Polk County deputy charged after baby dies in car

Posted: Updated:

A sexual tryst has led to the death of an 18-month-old child, and the resignation of a Polk County detention deputy.

Investigators say Christopher Eiland and his married girlfriend, Adriana Espinosa, went to the parking lot of a Holiday Inn Express in Sebring last month. Detectives say they left the infant in Espinosa's car with the fan on, but not the air conditioner.

Then the duo moved to Eiland's car, right next door for the sexual encounter, which was air conditioned.

"The sheer absorbed selfishness of the individuals that they can negate their responsibility, much less their innate nurturing role to protect a baby, is beyond my imagination," Highland County Susan Sheriff Benton commented to FOX 13.

When the pair returned two hours later, detectives say the baby was having a hard time breathing and foaming at the mouth, so they moved her to the air conditioned car. Instead of getting immediate medical attention, Eiland and Espinosa attempted to jump her car's battery, which had been drained because the fan was on.

According to detectives, 10 to 15 minutes later, they brought the baby into the hotel, and a clerk called 911, but it was too late.
