1000 Fetal Surgeries Completed, Children's Hospital Of Pennsylvania

PHILADELPHIA -

Every baby born is a miracle.

But, baby Audrey Rose is a medical miracle.

She's baby number 1000 to undergo fetal surgery, surgery on a fetus still in a pregnant uterus, at the Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania.

At just 19 weeks, she was diagnosed with Spina Bifida, an incomplete closing of the spine, in her mother's womb.

Many doctors told Audrey's mother to terminate the pregnancy, but CHOP surgeons successfully closed the unborn baby's spine.

Baby Audrey weighs five pounds, eight ounces.

The only evidence of her surgery is a scar on her back, and doctors expect her to go home in the next week or so.

Fox 29 is a proud partner of the Children's Miracle Network.  Children's Miracle Network Hospitals raises money for 170 children's hospitals across the US and Canada, including Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
