Christie Appoints GOP State Attorney General Chiesa To US Senate

TRENTON, N.J. -

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced Thursday morning that he is naming State Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa to temporarily fill the late Frank Lautenberg's U.S. Senate seat.

Chiesa, a longtime aide to Governor Christie as well as a former federal prosecutor, will fill the late seat for the next four months.

In a press conference Thursday afternoon, Christie expressed confidence in Chiesa's ability.

"I've obviously known Jeff for 22 years, and he has been an extraordinary public servant in the time that I've gotten to know him."

Gov. Christie also explained that he's deliberated the appointment in his head since before Lautenberg's passing.

"Senator Lautenberg had been ill, and I knew that this day might come, so I didn't just start thinking about this on Monday. I've been thinking about it no and off for some period of time."

In the press conference, Chiesa thanked the governor for the appointment and promised to do everything he can to serve the people of New Jersey.

In the Q&A afterwards, Christie revealed that Chiesa will not seek election to the Senate seat in the upcoming special election to fill the seat of the late Senator Frank Lautenberg on October 16.

Whoever wins the general election will have to run again next year before the seat expires in January of 2015.

Governor Christie will make a new appointment for State Attorney General next Monday.
