Construction Worker Recounts Building Collapse & Rescue

Posted: Updated:

The Center City building collapse on 22nd Street stunned the city of Philadelphia and beyond.  All day we say pictures and videos of the rescue efforts put forth by the firefighters and rescue crews.

Fox 29's Steve Keeley spoke to one man who was very close to the collapse.  He is not a firefighter or a police officer.  He is a construction worker who was working on a nearby gas line.

Instead of running away from the huge dust cloud and sounds of crashing bricks, he ran towards the scene, joined by some co-workers.  They feared that a there may be an underground fire.

What they found, was a chaotic scene, dust, smoke and a collapsed building with people screaming for help.

Dave Heintz told Steve that he and his fellow co-workers got right in there and were able to rescue 6 people.

When rescue and fire personnel arrived a few moments later, Dave said he stepped back and let the professionals begin to work the scene.

Dave was back to work this morning, at his job site, as the rescue and recovery efforts continue.
