Teenagers Say They're Not Getting Paid For Summer Job

A summer job has turned sour for a group of teenagers in Newark, Del.

Several employees and former employees of Bruster's Real Ice Cream on Capitol Trail called FOX 29 after they say their employer hasn't paid them yet.

"I was really excited. I told all my family and friends when I got the job," said Treasure Williams.

The 16-year-old was hired on April 24 as an ice cream scooper at Bruster's. It was her very first job. She was told she'd get paid every two weeks but so far hasn't seen a paycheck.

"Especially since it was my first job and expecting to get paid and then not getting paid. It was a really big downer for me," said Williams.

It turns out she's not alone. Several employees report identical stories of the store manager promising checks that never arrive.

"Friday, I never got it. Saturday, never got it. Sunday, never got it..." said 16-year-old Taylor Hazewski.

She started working at Bruster's on April 16 and has not received a paycheck. She says four of her co-workers have since quit.

"Each time I would not get paid I would tell my parents, and finally they just came up there and I said, 'I'm done. I'm not working for free,'" Hazewski said.

FOX 29's Chris O'Connell went to Bruster's for some answers. He was met by a manager named Melissa who confirmed the paycheck problem but didn't offer any answers.

"Right, nobody's been paid yet. They are getting paid. There are two checks that everybody is owed," said the manager.

As FOX 29 was at Bruster's, another employee showed up at the shop with her mother demanding to be paid.

"I think they're trying to take advantage of young children who are not aware of what the workforce consists of," said Alberta Lockhart.

Lockhart's 18-year-old daughter, Kira, has also been working at the shop since mid-April and has yet to be paid.

"I love the job, but it makes you feel like crap when you are not getting paid," said Kira Lockhart.

Treasure Williams tells us she plans on quitting her job and has already started applying for new ones. In the meantime, this high school junior is planning on filing a complaint with the state Department of Labor. She has learned a valuable lesson about the working world.

"I need to make sure I have everything I need and my manager explains things to me so I'm not in the dark like I am in now," she said.

FOX 29 has tried multiple times to contact the owner of Bruster's Real Ice Cream. But our calls have not been returned.
