Handicap van found after being stolen from Woodstock home

Authorities say that a minivan stolen from a Woodstock family with a special needs child has been recovered.

Cherokee County deputies say a red 2009 Toyota Sienna minivan was stolen from a home off of Ridgewood Drive overnight on Sunday.  The owners reported it missing from their driveway early Monday morning.

The missing minivan is customized with a wheelchair ramp for the family's 12-year-old son, Elijah Cook, who suffers from spina bifida.  The boy's leg braces, a laptop computer, and cash were also inside the van when it was taken.

The boy's mother, Brandy Brannon-Cook, said that she jumped in a car with a friend and immediately starting searching for the van. They found less than a mile from her home at a Metro Lodge motel in Cobb County.

"I almost cried when they found it," Elijah Cook said. "Because it's not just an ordinary car. It's part of how I get around."

Investigators found the boy's leg braces and the laptop inside the van, but the cash was gone, according to Lt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

Brandy Brannon-Cook said she had the money, which was about $400, in an envelope because she was going to pay bills on Monday.

Police said they have some leads in the theft, but no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information about the stolen minivan is asked to call 911 and report it immediately.
