Customer: No work done at home despite check being cashed

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

A Southfield woman made an agreement to have some work done at her home. She says a check has been cashed, but nothing has been done.

Connie McCabe spoke to Mark Juncaj at a vendor table at the Novi Home and Garden Show at the Suburban Collection Showplace in February. McCabe wanted her Southfield home spruced up. She said Juncaj set up an appointment for an estimate at her home in April.

"Walked the whole yard with us and said we can do this, we can do that. We'll power wash. We're going to do all the caulking. We can replace these boards. We can power wash this. We can seal it for you because it's a hazard," she said.

McCabe's deck needed some TLC, and Juncaj said he was the guy for the job. Home repairs and power washing for a price.

"He said to me, 'You'll be done by May 15,' but he said, 'I'm going to go ahead and put the 31st, but you'll be done,'" McCabe explained.

The check was cashed, but no one came to the house to do the work. Not one board has been replaced on McCabe's deck, no paint, no power washing and no progress.

"My last communication with him was if you're not at least here or responding to me by the 15th, I want my money back because he insisted on half down, and he couldn't take a credit card. He said He didn't have the equipment for credit cards. It would either be cash or check. The check was cashed immediately. We wrote a check for $1,375."

She filed a report with Southfield police. They are investigating. There is also another complaining party in Clawson. Kathy said she paid Juncaj $450 for work on her home, which she says has not been done.

The Novi Home and Garden Show told me Juncaj will never be allowed back into another show as a vendor.

"I was concerned that other people were being taken advantage of. I'm retired and I saved for this project, and I'm really heartsick," McCabe said.

Juncaj called me. He would not agree to do an interview. He did offer to pay McCabe her money back, but he asked me to give him her phone number. He said he hasn't been able to reach her.

UPDATE 6/3/13: Ron Savage reports Juncaj has refunded McCabe her deposit in full. McCabe got a bank check from an unidentified woman delivered to her personally outside the Southfield police station the morning of June 3.
