Acworth premature baby fighting to survive

Posted: Updated:

An Acworth family is holding out hope tonight that their premature baby will survive. The baby's parents are both unemployed and struggle just to visit him at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

Leon Milton, Jr. was born at 22 weeks weighing just 1 pound, 4 ounces. Doctors told his parents, Angela and Leon Sr. that Leon's prognosis is bleak.

"They actually told us that we didn't have much of a hope for him to make it. So, for him to be here 23 days is a miracle," said Angela Milton.

Leon Milton, Sr. said, "Before he was even born, they apologized to us and told us he wasn't going to make it. We were told his odds were less than 50 percent."

Four surgeries later, Leon Jr. is on life support and still fighting. But his life-threatening condition isn't the only challenge for Milton's.  Both of them are out of work and live off of one unemployment check.

"About a year ago, I got laid off and so did he from [the Atlanta-Journal Constitution] and we've been looking for jobs," said Angela Milton. "I've been going to school online.  It's just so hard out there."

The Miltons sold a car to try to make ends meet, but the mortgage keeps coming, medical bills are mounting and gas for  the 72-mile roundtrip to the hospital is expensive.

"We cut back on stuff that we don't need. We were going to let the cellphones go, but we can't because that's the only way we can keep in touch with the hospital," said Milton.

The Milton's say they have started a fund to raise money to help them deal with their son's medical bills. Their hope now is that little Leon beats the odds and pulls through.
