A Hillsborough County woman has been charged with animal cruelty after investigators say she neglected a horse to the point it was malnourished and had to be euthanized.
Linda Evans, 51, turned herself in to the Hillsborough County Jail Thursday afternoon, according to the sheriff's office.
Investigators said Evans fed the horse so little that it was subjected to "unnecessary pain and suffering."
Evans voluntarily relinquished the horse, named "Jolie," along with three other horses.
The horse rescue group that took Jolie in said the horse had to be euthanized on Wednesday.
According to the Equestrian Inc. Equine Rescue's Facebook page, Jolie went down and was struggling to get back up Tuesday.
The group gave her IV fluids and brought in a sling to try to help her get back up.
But according to the group's post, her back legs were not responding.
"It's with heavy hearts that we announce Jolie's fight is over. We tried every last effort to bring her back to her feet, but she was just too weak," the Facebook page said Tuesday.
According to the sheriff's office, the three other horses are doing okay.
Evans faces one charge of felony animal cruelty.
