ATLANTA -

An Atlanta automotive business says that thieves are targeting catalytic converters.

Atlanta Import Collision center they've seen 15 cases involving Honda Elements in the last few months. Two were in their shop on Tuesday.

"They don't know their car has been messed with until they come out the next morning to go to work and it sounds like a race car when they crank it up," said Blair Hughes of Atlanta Import Collision Center.

It's about a $1,800 repair and experts say there's not much that can be done to prevent the thefts.

The Honda Element is often targeted because it sits high off the ground and provides easy access. It is also easier for thieves to get the converter out.

"The Element has a little bit more of a certain element in there that is more desirable when they go to scrap the part," said Hughes.
