Moving? How to make it a smooth one

ATLANTA -

How stressful is moving?  Well, its number three behind death and divorce on the list of life's most stressful events.

For movers, the sound of packing tape signals the start of summer.  James Labounty of All My Sons Moving and Storage tells FOX 5 the 30 days in the month of June are the busiest of the year for movers.

And of course, the moving process starts with packing.  Monica Ricci of Catalyst Organizing says you should start de-cluttering and packing early.  She says a month might not be enough time for you to really prepare, so if you can, start as early as six months before your move date.

The less stuff you have, the less you have to move.  So, she recommends donating, selling, or trashing anything that doesn't fit into your new floor plan.  And even though big boxes might seem like a good idea, you should pack manageable boxes instead—simply because they're easier to move.

For delicate items, don't chance it.  Ricci says you should move it yourself if you'd be devastated to lose it.

Labounty says before you hand over your life's possessions to the pros, do your research.  He recommends looking at the claims ratio of movers, and make sure they're certified.  He says it's important to hire people who know what they're doing in your home.

Labounty also says you should schedule your move at least two weeks out, and pick a less-popular day like Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.  That way, your movers will be fresh.

He also recommends getting at least two different visual estimates.  Labounty says you shouldn't just compare prices, but also make sure you meet the people who will be in and out of your home.

The Georgia Movers Association is a good resource to use if you're looking for a mover.  Click here for a link to their website!

The notion of 'Keeping up with the Jones' is not new, but there is a new pressure coming at you. Peer pressure - whether you're 13 or 33 - is a powerful thing. Now throw in social media and you have what an Atlanta counselor calls 'Keeping up with the Jones' on steroids. And if you're not careful that can get costly.
