New Rutgers A.D. Under Fire For Treatment Of Former Players

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -

A new controversy is brewing at Rutgers University.

The woman hired to clean up the scandal surrounding the school's athletic department is now coming under fire herself for how former players say she treated them.

A report in the Star-Ledger claims that 49-year-old Julie Hermann quit as coach of Tennessee's women's volleyball team 16 years ago after her players complained in a letter that she humiliated and intimidated them.

And in 1997, a jury awarded $150,000 to a former assistant coach who said Hermann fired her because she got pregnant.

In a wedding video, posted on the Star-Ledger's website, Hermann jokes that the assistant coach better not come back pregnant.

Meantime, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he'll be looking into the allegations.

Hermann herself issued a statement that reads in part, "I was never notified of the reported letter outlining the concerns of some former athletes. However, I am truly sorry that some were disappointed during my tenure as coach."

"For sure, I was an intense coach, but there is a vast difference between high intensity and abusive behavior."
