Sheriff’s office investigating shooting range death in Lakeland
Deputies say a 71-year-old man was killed Sunday morning at a
shooting range in Lakeland.
It happened around 9:40 at the Tenoroc Mine Shooting Range.
The sheriff's office says Larry Simpson and his friend Jaime
Gonzalez were shooting clays at the range. According to Gonzalez, Simpson was
operating the remote control for the clay machine while Gonzalez was in the
sixth shooting station.
Gonzalez said he heard a gunshot and turned around to find
Simpson with a gunshot wound in the upper torso and his shotgun beside him.
It remains unclear how Simpson was shot. He died despite
efforts to save his life.
An autopsy was set for Monday.
