Buckhead apartment complex gutted by morning fire

Posted: Updated:

A massive fire destroyed more than 30 units of a Buckhead apartment complex over the weekend. The three-alarm fire gutted the four-story apartment complex and sent residents and firefighters to the hospital.

Flames and smokes could be seen from miles away coming from the Metropolitan Apartments at Buckhead located on Lenox Road around 7:20 a.m. Sunday. Fire officials say 32 units were engulfed by the fire which reportedly started on the first floor.

Fire crews were able to evacuate most of the residents safely with only two people reportedly receiving minor injuries. Atlanta Fire Department spokesperson Janet Ward told FOX 5 News that some of the residents had to be pulled from the burning building by ladder crews.

Officials say that two firefighters were injured while battling the blaze. One suffered second-degree burns while another was overcome by the heat. Both had to be taken to the hospital.

Firefighters also worked hard to rescue several pets in the building.

In all, 37 families were displaced. Atlanta Red Cross spokesperson Sherry Nicholson says they are providing assistance to 74 people.

Fire crews were on the scene most of Sunday hitting hot spots and securing the scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
