A Bay area mother is giving life to her young son, twice. Melissa Ranieri's toddler Evan was born with a devastating kidney disorder that required him to be hooked up to a dialysis machine for hours each week.
But just before Mother's Day, Melissa found out that her kidney was a perfect match for her son.
The two underwent a nearly six-hour transplant surgery on Wednesday. Just days later, the two are already on the rebound. Surgeons say Evan's body is accepting mom's kidney flawlessly and that he should get to feeling better soon.
"It's been kind of surreal. I've looked at his stomach. Obviously you can't see anything because of the dressing, but it's really amazing to know there's literally a piece of me inside of him that's helping him live dialysis-free. It's really amazing," Melissa Ranieri said Friday.
Melissa will get to head home from the Tampa General Hospital on Saturday. Evan will remain in the hospital for at least another week.
