1 Person Found Dead After Allentown Apartment Fire

Posted: Updated:
ALLENTOWN, Pa. -

Firefighters are on the scene of a fire in Allentown where they say one person has been found dead.

The one fatality is unrelated to the fire, in the words of the fire chief.

A dozen people were sleeping in six different apartments in the building on South Fourth Street when the blaze broke out around 3 a.m.

The odd thing about this fire is it started in the attic, above all the apartments, where there were no smoke detectors. So this fire was going and people were asleep, not knowing their building was on fire.

It was somebody driving by who called 911, and that's when the fire department arrived and began knocking on doors to get people out safely.

Inside one of the six apartments, firefighters found a middle-aged man dead on his kitchen floor. Authorities don't think the fire killed him, but they're not sure what did or how long he had been dead. So the coroner is investigating what killed him and will perform an autopsy.

A fire investigator says the cause appears to be electrical and accidental, but the exact cause is still under investigation.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley reported live from the scene Thursday morning with more details.
