'IN YOUR FACE' Time: K-Rod speaks! - FOX 13 News

Pride & prejudice: SEC football rules the south-- and everywhere else

Ever wonder what happens in the mind of Ken Rodriguez?  Scary thought-- we know.  But K-Rod's got plenty to say, so we're giving him 'IN YOUR FACE' Time on the web every Monday!  He'll tell you what's on his mind, and it won't always be what you think.  Here's his first post:

Something I've been wanting to get off my chest!

Before and after Alabama's awesome beat down of Notre Dame in the BCS title game, I fielded many questions on my Facebook page asking, in mostly condescending tones, why anyone would cheer for a team --in this case Alabama-- just because it plays in the Southeastern Conference?

The questions and statements became even more ill-tempered when Notre Dame's hopes began fading in the opening moments of the very first quarter of the game!  Then, on the way home, after the Crimson Tide had locked up a seventh consecutive national title for the SEC, a "local" radio host-- who admitted he was from New England-- devoted his entire program to the same question, while less-than-sincerely explaining he "just wants to understand why!"

It long ago became obvious to me that those who cannot or will not understand our fierce loyalty to our brand of football were either "not from around here," new to the region, or were in some serious need of Southern Comfort (insert your own interpretation)!   Well, bless your little heart, I will try to explain why most of us cheer for whatever SEC team is representing us-- in good cheer, of course.

I'll begin with something simple:  COLLEGE FOOTBALL RULES THE SOUTH!    I recently read that with 14 stadiums that can sit from 40,000 to 101,000 fans, the Southeastern Conference has led all conferences in average attendance for the past 15 college football seasons.  WE LOVE OUR FOOTBALL!

We always believe that the weekly grind of an Southeastern Conference schedule does make it the best in the country and therefore better prepares the conference champion for whatever the rest of the nation throws at us (see new playoff format-- good grief!).

Furthermore, it stands to reason that if a member of your favorite team's conference beats a national power outside the conference, it will enhance and strengthen the image of all.  Good for recruiting.  More prime time games.

Just as in the Olympics, it matters not where that sprinter is from-- he or she is wearing our flag and national pride.   And during football season the SEC is our flag!

The rest, I believe, is cultural.   Let's start by substituting SEC for "The South."   I'm talking about The "Yes ma'am," "No sir," and "Would you like some sweet tea?" South!   We are not only proud of our football, but of our manners as well!

Sure, it's an us versus them thing.   The national media expects us to understand the significance of Yankees vs. Red Sox multiple times a season, but can't bring themselves to understand The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, The Iron Bowl, The Egg Bowl, The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry, Alabama versus Tennessee, and Clean Old-Fashioned Hate… and so on!

Us versus them, but not in a ‘HELL NO WE AIN'T FORGOTTEN' way.   Rather, it's the deep down in the dirt comfort of knowing that our way is, well, BETTER!    It suits us, at least.   But please don't all of yous envious types move down here all at once.   We're still trying to assimilate, indoctrinate and spiritually witness to all who are already here.   Many of you guys are already seeing the light.   Your children certainly will!

I'll leave you with this: Alabama will surely begin the new season as the favorite to win it all again.  And again the only serious challenge to their supremacy will come from, once again, their own conference-- THE SEC!   I believe the national championship was decided last year in the Georgia Dome when Bama squeaked by the Georgia Bulldogs.

But rest assured, the envious national haters will try to find a new way to try and keep the Southeastern Conference from winning an eighth-straight national title!

Oh, I forgot!   The smarty pants came up with a new "playoff format."   Well, BLESS THEIR LITTLE HEARTS!
