WINTER HAVEN (FOX 13) -

Police in Winter Haven are looking for the man who robbed an off-duty Polk County sheriff's deputy over the weekend.

Detectives say it was just before 7 p.m. Saturday when Deputy Regina Hulverson was walking into the Publix on Cypress Gardens Blvd. in Winter Haven. A man, identified by police as Damarius Antwun Matthews, ran up and snatched her purse before fleeing in a silver Mazda.

Hulverson's department-issued badge and .380 Ruger were inside the purse.

The silver Mazda was later found by police and turned out to be a rental, but police are still looking for the thief.

Matthews, who turns 22 today, has a criminal history dating back to 2006. Winter Haven police warn that he should be considered armed and dangerous; anyone with information is asked to call Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477).
