NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The NYPD continues to look for the suspect who shot and killed a 14-year-old girl on a Queens MTA bus Saturday night.

The incident happened around 8:50 p.m. at Sutphin and Rockaway Boulevard in the Jamaica section.

Police say D'Asia Robinson had just left a friend's Sweet Sixteen party, when she was killed by a stray bullet.

Robinson was sitting on the Q6 bus with another girl, waiting for it to start its route when  gunfire erupted.

"She sits in the rear of the bus, just to the rear of the back door and all of a sudden – shots rang out," said NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly. "We believe at least nine shots were fired, nine shell casings were found on the ground – 40 caliber shell casings."

One bullet hit her in the temple and she was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital.

Her friends gathered in grief on the street where she lived, are having a tough time with the sudden and unexpected loss of their friend. Her friends made a memorial image to her and another tribute was set up at the bus stop on Sutphin Boulevard where the shootout happened.

"She was happy, she was having fun. We were all dancing with each other – that's why it's so shocking. I was just with her and an hour later, after I left the party, I hear she's killed – it's just so unexpected," said Tamia McDaniels, friend of D'Asia's.

Community leaders gathered to demand an end to the senseless violence.

"We have to take immediate action and call for the community's participation in providing law enforcement officials with what information they may have that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the shooter or shooters," said Community Advocate Tony Herbert.

D'Asia's friends told Fox 5 there were many people around when the shooting happened.

Police are pursuing all leads and are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
