Tree house’s future up in the air

Posted: Updated:

A couple in Holmes Beach is fighting the city to save a part of their house, but the problem is that part is up in a tree.

Lynn Tran and Richard Hazen built the luxurious tree house right on the beach around an Australian Pine. It's on the couple's private property.

Some people want it taken down. The couple wants it to stay up.

"This is our baby … and this is a live tree right here," said Lynn Tran.

They built it in May 2011. It took six months to build. They said they got a "verbal" clearance from a city official who no longer works with the city, but it's unclear why they didn't get it in writing.

"They simply don't like it, just a few people," Richard Hazen said. "We got permission."

Now the city says it violates development codes.

The couple has a website to keep folks updated. On it, they ask people to sign a petition so the city doesn't "destroy a couple's dream." Visit it at
