DELANCO, N.J. -

Authorities now say an early-morning shooting in Burlington County involved a police officer and a man he found in the street, both of whom were wounded.

Police said they received a 9-1-1 call at about 3:45 a.m. Tuesday from a resident in the 400 block of Delaware Avenue reporting a man causing a disturbance in the street.

Patrolman Francisco Ambrifi responded and found the man behaving in a disorderly fashion. According to a preliminary investigation, police say the man failed to comply with Ambrifi's orders and a struggle ensued.

During the struggle, Ambrifi fired his weapon, striking the man more than once. The patrolman also suffered a gunshot wound to his left knee during the struggle.

Ambrifi and the 21-year-old man were taken to hospitals for treatment. The man, whose name is not being released at this point because he has not been charged, is listed in critical but stable condition. Ambrifi was flown to Cooper University Hospital and is in stable condition.

Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi and Delanco Township Police Chief Jesse DeSanto said in a news release that this is an ongoing investigation, and no further information on the shooting will be released Tuesday.
