Police say a disgruntled former employee walked into a St. Petersburg motel Tuesday morning and shot the manager before turning the gun on himself.
It happened at the New Plaza Motel around 4:30 in the area of 34th Street North. Police are working two different shooting scenes.
That's because investigators say the suspect, Anthony Taylor, first shot manager Jerome Horacek in the check-in area of the motel before walking out of the building. The suspect's body was later found in a vacant lot near 3462 3rd Avenue North.
Police say the man was a former security officer at the motel. He had been fired from the motel but was allowed to rent out a room. However, police say he was going to be evicted because he was behind on rent.
Detectives say they aren't sure why Taylor went after Horacek. He had nothing to do with the firing. Detectives believe Taylor may have been trying to rob the motel of money.
Horacek was taken to the hospital but is expected to survive.
