Police in Gwinnett County say they were forced to shoot and kill a man after he allegedly attempted to use his vehicle as a weapon.

Cpl. Jake Smith of the Gwinnett County Police Department said that officers responded to a tip that a man wanted in Forsyth County was at 5307 Pass Court in Buford on Monday afternoon.

After four officers arrived on the scene just before 4 p.m., Smith said that the suspect, 38-year-old Rodney Pike, fled on foot into a parked vehicle. Smith said that officers attempted to use a Taser on Pike as he got into the vehicle, but the Taser did not slow him down. Pike then allegedly began driving the vehicle, striking one of the officers, according to police. The vehicle was headed towards another officer when two other officers shot and struck Pike, Smith said.

Pike appeared to be dead at the scene, according to Smith.

The officer struck by the vehicle was not seriously injured but taken to the hospital as a precaution, police said.

Pike was listed on Forsyth County's "most wanted" site for felony probation violation and failure to appear in court.

Pike's mother, Joan Morgan, disputes the police account of the incident. She claimed that her son did not sure his vehicle as a weapon. She said he was at a rental home owned by a family member doing landscaping work when police arrived to arrest him.

"They shot him so many times and he did not have nothing on him -- no weapons. He just backed out of that driveway and then they opened fire on him," Morgan said.

Morgan said that Pike intended to turn himself in, but she did not indicate when he planned to do so.

Pike had three children, his mother said.

The two officers involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure when an officer is involved in a shooting.
