Chicago tall ship sailor shot and killed in Bahamas

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A sailor from Chicago working on a tall ship was fatally shot in the Bahamas over the weekend.

He is identified as 34-year-old Kyle Bruner, a former special education teacher and the tall ship Liberty Clipper's first mate.

Family members said Bruner was killed when he came to the aid of a woman in the capital city of Nassau. They said she was being mugged by two armed men.

Mother's Day was an incredibly difficult one for the family.

Rick Bruner had to tell his wife on Mother's Day that her son was gone.

"Waking my wife up to tell her what had happened…and it was, it was extremely difficult," Bruner explains.

Kyle Bruner's family says he was athletically gifted. He was a jack of all trades and a ladies man. Regardless of relationships, the sea was his mistress and he refused to leave her.

"I told him, you know, it's always better to say I did then to say I could have. And with his life he did," Bruner says of his son.

One week shy of returning to the ship's home in Boston, he was killed for stepping up to protect people in need.

"If he saw someone being bullied, he would intervene," Bruner says. "This is…it's been that same way his whole life. And so, to say that it would have been nice if he would have just ignored it and walked away, but that wasn't the person we knew and loved."

Bruner says police in Nassau have arrested one person in his son's case. He says although nothing will bring his son back, he wants to make sure these men do not hurt anyone else.
