ATLANTA (AP) - Republicans in some states are using their control to reach into local affairs, including in cities and counties controlled by Democrats.
In North Carolina, GOP lawmakers are trying to create a regional authority to control the Charlotte Airport now run by Mayor Anthony Foxx and the city council. Foxx is President Barack Obama's nominee for secretary of transportation. The GOP has already voted to regionalize the water system in Asheville.
In Georgia, the fight centers on Fulton County and the Atlanta metro transit system. As in North Carolina, various bills would shift authority to either state officials or more Republican suburbs.
Republicans say they aren't making a power play, but Democrats accuse them of abusing their power to takeover local governments they can't win over at the ballot box.
