VA van drops off dementia patient at wrong location

Posted: Updated:

An Atlanta man who suffers from dementia was dropped off at an incorrect location by a Veterans Administration hospital van, FOX 5 has learned.

Aretha Wells says that her husband Robert, a decorated veteran of the Korean War, began having his mental capacity diminish around his 80th birthday two years ago.

"He just wonders and probably gets confused turning around, going one way and then another. He gets confused in the house. Sometimes he'll say, ‘Which way do I go to the bathroom,'" said Aretha Wells.

He's been served by a VA hospital for years. But his wife said that on Thursday, he was supposed to be transferred to a treatment facility in East Point. She said he never made it there.

A driver dropped him off at another location. A female motorist spotted the elderly man.

"She says her grandfather had dementia, so she recognized the…tendencies," said Aretha Wells.

Robert Wells rang the doorbell and surprised his wife.

Aretha said she doesn't know what would have happened if the Good Samaritan had not helped her husband.

"There's no telling because he was weak when he got here. He could have fallen out in the highway and someone hit him -- anything could have happened to him. I'm very grateful for that woman. I wish if she sees this newscast that she would give me another chance to really, really thank her," said Aretha Wells.

Wells said that the Good Samaritan refused an offer of money for the help.

FOX 5's Morse Diggs said that a hospital spokesperson admitted the transportation error on the part of one of their van contractors. They said they are reviewing the process and they have called the wife to apologize.
