'Multiple explosive devices' found in Tampa home

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

After blowing his own fingers off, a Tampa man is facing bomb-making charges.

Agents from the Tampa Police Department, FBI, and ATF detailed the case against James Lee Minyard at a Wednesday afternoon press conference.

"This type of event in today's atmosphere has a pretty big impact, but regardless we take it extremely serious," said John Newman, an investigator with the Tampa Police Department.

Police say the 41 year old called 911 Tuesday and said he had blown off two fingers in an accident. He was taken to the hospital with injuries said to be non-life threatening.

Investigators say he had been carrying two homemade pipe bombs, one of which had exploded. A subsequent search of his home turned up four more improvised explosives, along with evidence of small explosions in the backyard. Police believe he was making them in a makeshift lab inside.

"Since that happened over there in Boston, I'm like, what is he thinking about," said neighbor Yamil Chaparro.

"Not only scary, it is an embellishment of somebody needing help," said Bernard Silver, another neighbor.

Police say they don't believe that Minyard had any plan to attack any person or target. They say he told them he was building them for recreation, and to prove a point.

"He was an underachiever in school, never finished, and he wanted to show he had some sort of capacity to do that," Newman said.

Minyard is in jail. His father told FOX 13's Josh Cascio he was unaware of what was going on. He says his son now needs to own up to the consequences.
