NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A court officer was wounded in an accidental shooting inside the federal courthouse in Central Islip, Long Island, authorities said.

The 67-year-old special deputized marshal, who works for a private security contractor called Akal Inc., was getting ready for work in a locker room. He was transferring his .45-caliber pistol from his off-duty holster when it accidentally fired, Suffolk County Police said. He was hit once in the left arm.

An ambulance took the officer, who has decades' experience in law enforcement, to Stony Brook University Hospital. The wound is considered non-life-threatening, police said.

The area where the shooting happened is off limits to the public, the U.S. Marshals Service said. One other person was in the locker room at the time of the shooting but was not hurt, police said.

Police and federal authorities are investigating.
