A woman hit by an Atlanta police officer speeding to a call filed suit over the accident on Wednesday.
Kenyatta White says her life has been turned upside down since she was hit by that officer. The mother of two wants compensation for her injuries and more training for officers.
Jackie Culp died from her injuries when Fulton County police say Atlanta Police Officer Joshua Sieck sped through an intersection at Cascade and Fairburn roads last July. The officer was responding to a call when he hit Culp's car and another car driven by White.
White had her young children in the car. She says she constantly relives the crash in her mind.
"It's been a major setback in my life. I haven't been able to move on with my life because I lost my vehicle out there. I haven't been able to work," White said. "Physically I'm better, but mentally, I'm still going through a lot of things."
White's attorneys say she suffered head, neck and back injuries and -- more importantly -- emotional scars that have never healed. Her attorneys claim that the city of Atlanta has stonewalled all their efforts to talk about a claim, so they filed suit.
"Total lack of communication to the point that even a non-governmental agency, an insurance company, would at least respond back as a professional courtesy and communicate. That hasn't happened," said Muwalie Davis, White's attorney.
White's attorneys say the city responded by firing officer Sieck, but what they would like to see now, in addition to financial compensation, is more training for police who answer emergency calls.
"It's a training issue. Officers have to know and have to be trained There are always going to be times where officers have to rush to scenes of some emergency," said Robert Bozeman, White's attorney. "What has to be watched and monitored is...is there an abuse of those opportunities?"
Atlanta's deputy attorney Eric Richardson said in a statement, in part, "The Law Department has requested information from Ms. White's lawyers and explained that the claim must be thoroughly investigated prior to any settlement discussions."
White's Attorney dispute that, claiming they were never contacted about any information.
