The Sam Rampello Pirates are working hard for their first-ever undefeated flag football season. These middle school student-athletes take great pride in their team.
"I'm hoping for this team this year to go undefeated and go to the championship and win us a goal," said 8th grade tight end/running back Karmine Mackey.
The Pirates have scored well over 200 points already this season, holding opponents to two touchdowns, total. Sixth grade quarterback Steven Castellana says his team is really good -- the best team ever.
But just getting to practice takes a little extra effort. Sam Rampello School, in the heart of downtown Tampa, was built without a gym, and without a football field.
"It takes a lot extra parent involvement at Rampello, and the support of the administration is phenomenal," according to Head coach Bruce Kensky. "It's basically all dedication knowing that these kids need the exercise. They need to be able to go out and play hard and hopefully we're teaching them a little bit about sportsmanship -- how to win right, how to lose right."
They are life lessons the Sam Rampello Pirates will remember long after their record-setting season.
