Matthew Galloway has gotten a 'Big Break.' The former Durant High golfer was one of 12 golfers selected to compete on Golf Channel's reality show.
The 28-year-old is playing the round of his life. Essentially, it's an on-air tryout.
"It was really a lot of pressure," said Galloway. "There is 15 cameras out there at all times. They are always on you. Every shot could be your last shot. So you don't know when you could be going home or when you could be going to the next show. You just have to step up and except the pressure. Try to earn your 'Big Break,' essentially."
The show was taped in January and will air in May.
Matthew didn't get to much time to prepare. It was a four-month wait and he was given just a few weeks' notice before he flew to Mexico.
"It's an experience I'll never forget," Galloway continued. "It's something I learned a ton from. It's an experience I'd never be able to pay for."
It's a huge payoff for the winner, who won't be relieved until July. The champion walks away with $50,000 and a one-tournament exemption on the PGA or LPGA tour.
The show's concept pits highly skilled golfers against each other in a variety of challenges that test their physical skills and mental toughness.
"You kind of know what's coming," explained Galloway. "It's just a matter of when they are going to throw it at you. You practice your flop shots, your punch shots. You hit some shots at some random stuff. You're more preparing yourself for not knowing what's going to come."
You would think spending three weeks at an exclusive Mexican golf resort would be a vacation. But it wasn't all fun and games for Matthew. His day started at 4:30 a.m. and didn't finish until midnight.
The toughest part was when he returned home and couldn't tell anyone the results, not even his girlfriend.
"It's tough, I'm kind of bad at secrets," he laughed. "I just want everyone to watch and enjoy it. So that's what I tell them. I just want you to watch and enjoy it. Tune into May 13th and see what happens. I can't tell you, but it will be good."
But just how good? Did he win? There's no breaking Matthew while he waits for his Big Break.
"You're going to have to watch and find out."
