Many questions, few answers after toddler’s death

Posted: Updated:

Five days after 2-year-old Aliyah Marie Branum was murdered, there is frustratingly little information about how it happened or who's responsible.

The Medical Examiner's Office ruled the Citrus County toddler's death a homicide, saying she died as a result of "extreme trauma".

"It's devastating for something to happen to a small child. They don't ask to be here. She didn't deserve death," neighbor Renee Dranberg said.

Sheriff's deputies were called to a home in Hernando on Friday. They say the little girl was in some sort of distress. That night she was pronounced dead at Citrus Memorial Hospital.

"We noticed the ambulance come in there and then the ambulance left, and within a few minutes, they had the street roped off here and crime scene tape around it," Dranberg said.

Neighbors say they've seen two older girls playing at the home, but not Aliyah.

"No, I never saw her outside playing. Never even knew she was there," Dranberg said.

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office has not returned our calls to explain the circumstances surrounding Aliyah's death. They aren't saying whether anyone's been arrested, or if they're even looking for someone.
