Long-time Polk school bus driver killed in weekend crash

Posted: Updated:

It was supposed to be a night out on the town. Unfortunately, for three people, it was the last night they would spend together.

Flowers, loving notes, a wooden cross, and candles have appeared where they died in a car crash early Sunday morning.

The crash happened at the intersection of Coronet and Shepherd Roads, just southwest of Lakeland.

Dorothy Operhall, her husband, Leonard Simmons, and an out-of-state relative were killed when their car was hit by a truck. Another out of state relative in the car survived.

Investigators say the driver of the truck, 21-year-old Casey McCoy, went through a stop sign. They say he was drinking but won't know how much until the toxicology report comes back.

Operhall has been a Polk County bus driver for the last 19 years.

"Every one of her evaluations since 1994, every one of them said she was a great driver, dependable, and would do anything you asked her to do," said Rob Davis, who oversees Polk's school bus drivers. "It is a loss."

Early Monday, the man in Operhall's car who survived was in critical condition, according to the Polk Sheriff's Office.

Mc Coy was hospitalized with some broken bones.
