For 41 years, Regata del Sol race has been a family affair

ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) -

The 45th annual Regata del Sol takes off from the St. Petersburg Pier. This race to Isla Mujeres, Mexico, lasts about three days, depending on conditions and crew skills.

The toughest part might be fatigue during night shifts, but that's also considered prime time by participants with calm Gulf waters expected along with a full moon.

The crew of "Mango Latitudes" makes this a family affair. Skipper Fred Bickley and 1st Mate Penny made this their honeymoon trip 41 years ago.

"It really is fun. I guess it's the camaraderie of all the crew," Penny says.

Their son, Fred Jr., met his bride on Isla Mujeres, and they held their wedding on the Mexico island a few years ago.

The family, including daughter Christina, makes the voyage this year.
