Flasher Luring Students at Philadelphia University

Posted: Updated:

A man driving around the campus of Philadelphia University is using a ruse to lure young women to his car-- and it's working.  Police are anxious to find him, because he's struck five times within the space of a week, all during lunchtime.  No students have been injured physically, but police say they're not sure what the man might be capable of.

Philadelphia University is home to one of the safer corners of the city.  But even there, crime can creep in.  In this case, it's in the form of a driver pretending to be lost.  Capt. John Darby, head of the Philadelphia Police Department's Special Victims Unit, says the man "asks for directions, so he draws the complainant towards the vehicle."

It happened the first time a week ago Thursday along School House Lane, which cuts through the campus.  Police say the conversation quickly turned lewd, then the man drove away in a dark green Jeep Liberty.  Two days ago he returned, luring four different women toward his car within the space of just one hour.  "All the victims are 18 to 26 years old," Capt. Darby explained.  "These are college students."

Autumn Rockhill is a freshman at Philadelphia University. "It happened where I come home, like I come back from one of my classes by myself at night, so I was like, Oh my God, what if that was me, and I got real scared."

In one of those four instances on Wednesday, the driver exposed himself, terrifying the victim.  "One of the girls that it happened to, she came into the class and she was crying, and then she got called by security, safety and security at our school, and had to go tell them what happened," Freshman Caitlin Lowery told Fox 29.

Police are asking everyone on campus to be alert.  "There's a possibility this male is parked in the area on other days," Capt. Darby explained.  "We obviously have increased the patrol and plain clothes presence in the area.  But the public's going to help us to see perhaps if he's idling in a particular location, give us a tip."

Detectives are hoping that tip will be a license plate number.  Police say the man is white, between 40 to 50 years of age, stocky, bald, with a graying beard and tinted glasses.

Video games may be pure fantasy, but a violent action-adventure game called "Watch Dogs" has ignited a very real debate in one South Jersey community. Watch Dog allows players to adopt the persona of a James Bond-like computer hacker, chasing an evil mastermind. People say it's chock-full of foul language, sex and violence, features dark and foreboding backdrops. The latest version, which is due out this fall may be set in Camden.
