Beau Rutledge was killed by a family pet on Wednesday after authorities say the mother went to the bathroom.
Lakisha Moss rushed into the home after hearing the screams from the boy's mother three doors down.
"When she came out she collapsed to the ground and my mother just kind of grabbed her and held her and I ran to see what it was. And I opened the door and when I opened up the door I saw the baby laying there. He had been attacked by the dog and there was a pool of blood," said Moss.
That dog remained locked in a bathroom for hours after the attack while police retrieved the little boy's body and investigated.
Lakisha says that the mother had locked the dog away right after the attack and when she went into the home, it sounded like the dog was trying to come through a bathroom door.
"He was going off. He was really aroused. He was really barking. He seemed like he was trying to scratch against the door and things like that, trying to get out," Moss said.
The dog's behavior yesterday surprised neighbors who know the family.
"Not vicious at all. It was a family pet. I don't know what went through the dog's mind but it wasn't a vicious dog," Kendra Clopton said.
Friends and neighbors are grieving over the tragic loss of this child.
"It's probably something that could have been prevented but it wasn't. And there's nothing you can do now to change it but pray," Tammy Ellis said.
A memorial for the boy has been placed outside the home.
The pit bull was taken to the Fulton County Animal Shelter. Authorities have not said what will happen to the animal.
