Study: Single soda a day can increase diabetes risk

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A large study out of Europe suggests that just one can of soda a day can increase your chance of getting diabetes by 22 percent.

Researchers also found that with every additional can of soda you drink your risk of diabetes continues to go up.

There have been studies like this done in the U.S. Those studies also found that drinking a lot of soda is linked with obesity and Type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition that affects nearly 310 million people across the world.

There have been attempts to ban larger sugary drinks in some cities, including New York City, but they have failed.

As for diet soda, researchers say people who drink one diet soda a day also have increased risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. But that's only if they are also overweight.

This is the largest study ever done on the link between sodas and diabetes.

More than 350,000 people were studied.
