Prom season is in full swing. It's always a special night for the kids -- and a pricy one for parents.
A new study may cause some sticker shock for parents. Visa surveyed 3,000 families from across the country. They found American families will spend an average of $1,139 on prom night this year, up five percent from 2012.
FOX 13 called several different shops, salons, and schools in search of a local average price...only to find the Bay area total isn't much better.

There are some alternatives for parents who want to scale back on prom budgets.
Several online brands, like Tradesy.com and RentTheRunway.com now offer discount rentals for new and gently-used gowns. Tampa's Salvation Army also just launched a new program this year, offering brand new and gently-used boutique prom dresses for a fraction of their retail price.
